Terroir is indeed a composite of many physical and intangible cultural factors. Recently, it has been rather poetically defined in the French press as "somewhere-ness".
In the classical conception, this "somewhere-ness" is about the special, unique quality imparted by the earth and the environment that transcends the winemaker's personal style or quality aesthetic. A particular group of vineyards or block of vines, belonging to a specific appellation and sharing the same type of soil, weather conditions, grapes and wine making savoir.
It is not about technology or technique or oak quality and its astute application; rather it's how the winemaker understands the 'terroir' or unique fingerprint of a particular region and vineyard site. And how they then translate this very individual and oftentimes fragile personality, unmasked and enhanced, into the distinctive wine they finally create.
The Vintage Wineworx team, led by the highly awarded Mr Greg Jones, has a thorough understanding of the individual terroir of the regions and sub-regions of the Southwest. An understanding of the different viticultural aspects throughout the regions gives our clients optimum wines that are intelligently made and are in context with their unique terroir.
This experience, which grows with each new vintage, enables the Wineworx team to recognise the subtle nuances that come into play and affect the critical synergy between viticultural management and winemaking.
It all adds up to the creation of 'individual' wines - each with its distinctive terroir nurtured and developed to its ultimate potential.
